Biography

American designer Florence Knoll studied architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Her meeting with her future husband, Hans Knoll, was decisive in her career. Together they founded Knoll Associates, which within a few years gained international recognition. A pioneer of the Knoll planning unit, she revolutionized the design of interior space. Her belief in “total design” encompasses architecture, industrial and interior design, textiles and graphics. In her words, she does not decorate but creates spaces. More than just aesthetics, she thinks of furniture within its environment...

In 2002, Florence Knoll was awarded the National Medal of Arts by the Foundation for the Arts for her contributions to the world of architecture and design.
